Despite my affinity for the New York Dolls, I’ve rarely listened to their 2006 reunion album, One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This. The other day I was in the gym and decided that—rather than spin From Paris With Love (L.U.V.) again—I’d queue up the new stuff. It didn’t win my heart musically, but it does boast a surprisingly literate set of lyrics with references to Jean Cocteau1 and Inherit the Wind2.
That’s not exactly what I expected…although as soon as it ended, I went back to yet another trip through the eleven songs on their debut.
Also, if anyone can suggest a hobby that doesn’t involve being insufferably dorky, please drop me an email.
1 “Runnin’ Around” has the line “Beauty and the Beast/Cocteau is to blame”, a nod to his 1946 film, La Belle et la Bête.
2 “Dance Like A Monkey”—a wretched track otherwise—rhymes “Exorcise your demons with that monkey friend” with “Because we’re gonna inherit the wind”, the latter being a play-turned-film(s) about the Scopes Monkey Trials.
