Laurie David explains how she decided to date her future husband (and future ex-husband) Larry David:
“He was a mess,” she says now. “No future, no dough, no potential. When we first started seeing each other, I literally sat down with a girlfriend, and on a paper place mat I wrote ‘Pro’ and ‘Con.’ The ‘Con’ list had fifteen, twenty things on it. He had this disgusting apartment. He had a cup and a spoon. He was this comedian who’d walk off stages if everybody wasn’t paying attention. He refused to travel, refused to go anywhere. He never did anything to try to be successful, not for one second. He just pursued his craft. The ‘Pro’ list had one thing on it: He’s funny.”
I like to think that at some point, my first husband will catalog my quirks in much the same way. The ‘Con’ list will note my affinity for lanky Englishmen, the fact that I often eat cereal for six or seven straight meals, my constant whingeing that I’m not famous yet, my face-clawing fear of airplanes, my unhealthy stack of t-shirts that feature the words “Nick” and “Lowe”, the unsettling amount of fidgeting I do at all times, my insomnia, my inability to work for anyone but myself. But the ‘Pro’ side of the page will say the exact same thing: “She’s funny”.
And I’ll be one hundred percent OK with that.
