The Kinks: “Waterloo Sunset”
There is absolutely no reason why I should know that Ray Davies turns 65 today. But I do, and it’s as good a reason as any to post this song, which is in my all-time top ten.
Nobody else made vignettes about British society so damn catchy (“A Well Respected Man”, anyone?) and my GAWD, the man can turn a phrase.
Also buried in the Kinks’ back catalog, sandwiched between “Lola” and Muswell Hillbillies, is a little-known soundtrack to a flick called Percy, which was about a bionic penis transplant.
There’s absolutely no reason for me to know that either.
