Graham Parker: “I Want You Back”
A lot of London’s so-called Pub Rockers bit mercilessly from American R&B acts (after they stopped trying to be The Band) and turned to Motown for inspiration. Nick Lowe admits to liberally “borrowing” from the Jackson 51 for his first album but here, Graham Parker just goes for it and covers Marlon & Tito & Jermaine & Michael & The Other Guy straight up. And it works. Holy shit, does it work.
1 For reals, “Nutted By Reality” is so close to being a Jackson 5 song, you half expect Joe Jackson to backhand him at about the ninety second mark.
