I just read Mojo’s article about the 50th anniversary (or birthday or whatever) of Island Records. A few pages later, they listed the fifty greatest releases on the label ranging from Paul Weller’s 22 Dreams (#50) to Nirvana’s The Story of Simon Simopath (#1).
NOTE BEFORE I WRITE ANY MORE WORDS: No, not THAT Nirvana. These guys were a short-lived British psychedelic outfit who did, in fact, sue Cobain & crew over the use of the name. Both of them won, both got to keep it, the end.
Anyway, it’s a bizarre list that ranks Liege and Lief by folky Fairport Convention waaaaay ahead of Achtung Baby and puts Wynder K. Frog in the Top Ten. Number four in their world is Spooky Two by Spooky Tooth. This one they got right.
Until I saw their name in bold type, I had forgotten about Spooky Tooth, as has pretty much everyone except the members of Spooky Tooth and maybe that creepy guy at the used record store that you once saw steal a stack of Eric Clapton CDs, and not even the good ones from when he had a drug problem.
Today is Spooky Tooth Friday in my apartment. I apologize to my neighbors if the bluesy sludge leaks through the ceiling.
