“Oh yeah. John Lennon was definitely my favorite Beatle, hands down. I don’t know who wrote what parts of what Beatles songs, but Paul McCartney embarrasses me. Lennon was obviously disturbed. So I could relate to that.”
—Kurt Cobain
I made the mistake of going to a used book store yesterday and came out with a giant bag on my back, hunched and straining like the old man on the cover of Led Zeppelin IV. This quote came from one of my purchases, an anthology of Rolling Stone interviews.
I also snapped up Hunter Davies’ original biography of the Beatles (published in 1968, so it ends after the recording of Magical Mystery Tour); a history of The Jam by Rick Buckler and Bruce Foxton, aka the two dudes not named Paul Weller; and Blackbird, an out-of-print biography of Paul McCartney that I read in the summer of 1994, back when I addressed all of my diary entries to Sir Paul. No, I didn’t have a lot of entries that involved hanging out with other people, thanks for asking.
