The Jags: “Back of My Hand”

Now that I’ve gotten the Holsapple/Stamey out of my system1, it’s back to forgotten British power popsters for me.  I was in college longer than The Jags were a band but during their four years, they managed to release two solid albums; by contrast, I once drank so much I temporarily forgot how to read.2 They were essentially a one and a half hit wonder, with this being the ‘one’ part of the equation.3

If you can get your ears on their 1980 debut album, Evening Standards, it’s catchy enough to warrant repeated listening, although I’m not sure Elvis Costello ever tried as hard to be Elvis Costello as singer Nick Watkins does over the course of its eleven tracks.

1 It was a solid show, wrapped in two-part harmonies and—fittingly—Everly Brothers covers. Full review coming tomorrow…

2 Just kidding, Mom. Nothing to see here.

3 The ‘half’ was a song called “Woman’s World” that wriggled onto the singles chart for one lonely week.
