Chuck Prophet: “I Can Feel Heart Beat”

I knew of Chuck Prophet before yesterday, from his work with the reluctant Paisley Underground-ers Green on Red.  He hopped onto their albums starting with Gas Food Lodging, when they’d removed any lingering hints of psychedelia from their sound and pointed their guitars toward the twang of the desert.  Fitting, ain’t it, for a band that originally rolled out of Arizona in the first place.

Yesterday a friend of a friend directed me toward Mister Prophet’s solo output with an email that mentioned his music and name-dropped both Big Star (appropriate since Alex Chilton appears on some of Green on Red’s later releases) and my fave record label, Yep Roc.  And just like that, I knew that Chuck and I were gonna get along just fine.

I could spill several more paragraphs on my first reactions to his albums, but I’m late for dinner so instead I’ll leave you with a track from his most recent LP Soap and Water (although there’s a new one on the way in October) and direct you toward his website. and to an entertaining bit of pub from Yep Roc.  He’s worth getting to know.  He’s gonna be around for a while.
