R.E.M.: “First We Take Manhattan”

Because I was too busy making lists of things I would lick off Hugh Laurie’s chest, I totally forgot Leonard Cohen’s 75th birthday yesterday.  He spent his last couple of days as a nimble 74 year old in a Spanish hospital after collapsing onstage, most likely as a result of food poisoning.

This R.E.M. cover is off the excellent I’m Your Fan tribute to Cohen, which also features the Pixies, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds and Lloyd Cole.

I’m late to the Cohen party (in more ways than one, duh) but I highly recommend both the recently released Live In London double disc set, as well as his Book of Longing poetry collection.
