"Besides several solid Accelerate outtakes, the selling point is R.E.M’s spelunking through early catalog gems, when Stipe’s vibrato-seizure vocals and Rorschach-blot “lyrics” clung to songs exploding at the seams. The stitching is tighter now and drummer Bill Rieflin often holds things together too neatly."

Mr. Hermes, you almost got it right and I’d agree with you entirely if you’d lopped the last two words off of your final sentence. “Drummer Bill Rieflin often holds things together.” Period.
To my ears, he’s one of the best drummers working today and—as I’ve preached before from atop my Athens-loving soapbox—Accelerate doesn’t work at all without him behind the kit.
The End.
